The Town of Grottoes is proud to offer two outstanding parks that provide a wide range of recreational opportunities for residents and visitors. John E. Painter Park is a vibrant community space featuring ball fields, picnic shelters, a fishing pond, tennis courts, river access with a boat ramp, and a dedicated dog park—perfect for outdoor fun and family gatherings. Just minutes away, Grand Caverns Park offers scenic beauty and historic charm, and is home to our newly reopened community pool as of 2025. Whether you’re looking to relax, play, or explore, Grottoes’ parks have something for everyone.

John E. Painter Park

Nestled in the heart of Grottoes, John E. Painter Park is a beloved community space offering something for everyone—from serene nature walks to fun, family-friendly activities. Whether you’re looking to unwind, get active, or simply enjoy the beauty of the outdoors, this scenic park provides the perfect setting for all.

The park is named in honor of John Elwood Painter, a dedicated law enforcement officer whose career spanned over two decades.

Serving as the Chief of Police for the Town of Grottoes before moving to the Bridgewater College Police Department, Officer Painter’s life was tragically cut short on February 1, 2022, when he lost his life in the line of duty while responding to an incident at Bridgewater College.

His service, dedication, and sacrifice continue to be remembered and celebrated at the park, located at 1100 20th Street in Grottoes.

John E. Painter Park offers 5 picnic shelters which can accommodate from 35-75 people.  Each shelter has a water spigot closely associated, and a permanent grill available for use.  All shelters have electricity available. There are fees to reserve a picnic shelter and reservations may be made anytime after March 1 of each year.

Grand Caverns Park

Grand Caverns Park is a beautiful spot for outdoor recreation, offering a variety of amenities to enhance your visit.

The park features spacious picnic shelters, perfect for family gatherings, birthday parties, or community events.

Enjoy the scenic views as you take advantage of the walking trails, or relax in the open areas ideal for picnicking and playing. With putt-putt, sports fields, and the newly reopened community pool, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Whether you’re planning a day of fun or a peaceful escape into nature, Grand Caverns Park is a perfect destination for all ages.

Grand Caverns offers 5 picnic shelters which can accommodate from 75-200 people.  There are also several free standing picnic tables available.

Each shelter has a water spigot closely associated and a permanent grill available for use. All shelters have electricity available and Shelter #2 has a massive stone fireplace.  There are fees to reserve a picnic shelter and reservations may be made anytime after March 1 of each year.

Grand Caverns Pool

We’re excited to announce that the community pool at Grand Caverns reopened in May 2025 after being closed for repairs over the past two years.

The pool is now open seven days a week from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM, weather permitting. It’s the perfect place to cool off, relax, and enjoy the summer season with family and friends!

Pool Party Rates:        
$200 (7:00 – 9:00 pm), additional $50 fee per lifeguard, 50 guest max.

*Residents now include those who live in zip codes 24441 & 24471.

** Group rate applies to groups of 12 or more paying guests purchasing tickets together.
