Routine Water Line Chlorination in Progress

The Town of Grottoes will be performing routine water line chlorination today as part of our ongoing efforts to maintain a safe, dependable, and high-quality water supply for all residents.

Why Chlorination Is Important

Chlorination is a standard water treatment practice used across the country to protect public water systems. Even though our water requires no treatment before entering the distribution system, small amounts of buildup—such as harmless biofilm—can form inside pipes over time. A scheduled flush with chlorine helps:

  • Protect public health by reducing bacteria and microorganisms
  • Maintain quality and taste of drinking water
  • Extend the life of the water system by controlling organic buildup

What You Might Notice

During this process, some residents may notice a slight chlorine odor or taste in their tap water. This is normal and temporary—your water remains safe to drink and use.

How to Flush Your Water Lines (If Needed)

If you wish to reduce the chlorine odor or taste in your home’s water, you can flush your household plumbing:

  1. Run cold water from your kitchen or bathroom sink for several minutes.
  2. For a quicker flush, use an outdoor spigot if available.
  3. The chlorine odor should fade shortly after flushing.

📌 Routine Maintenance Schedule

The Town of Grottoes conducts system-wide chlorination several times a year as part of our proactive maintenance program. This schedule helps ensure our water system remains clean, safe, and dependable year-round.
